In this era of globalization and Information Technology, English has a special and predominant role in the communicative sphere of the world. This language enjoys most prestigious reputation in the world and has a special identity in the field of education. English Language Teaching Institute is one of the foremost centers of teaching and learning English in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The distinguished academic institute was conceived in December 1956 by British Council, New Delhi, with the financial assistance from Nuffield Foundation, a British charitable trust. It was taken over by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1963 and later subsumed in the State Council of Educational Research and Training in September 1981. The institute has always encouraged the spirit of quality research coupled with quality teaching and has become a nucleus of teaching and learning English for teachers at different levels from Primary to higher secondary in the state.

Infrastructure

The Institute is housed in its own campus at 23 Allenganj, near Allahabad University. It is about 10 kms from Allahabad Junction and 1.5 kms from Prayag Station. In the beginning the institute was housed at central Pedagoical Institute Allahabad. Later in 1974 it shifted to its own present campus, The constructed area comprises the following:

• The main building - It consists of the Principal's chamber, the office an auditorium, a lecture hall, a library, a language lab, 7 tutorial room 5 toilet and a garage.
• The hostel for women - It is in the possession of Secondary Education Commission since 1982.
• The Principal's residence - It has been taken over by the District Magistrate, Allahabad. Presently Deputy Secretary, Board of High School & Intermediate Education Uttar Pradesh is staying in it.
• Quarters for Class IV employees - four on the ground floor and one on the first floor.
